History

Delaware was nearly chosen as Ohio’s capital—legend has it the city lost to Columbus by just one vote. Founded in 1808, it quickly gained attention for its natural sulfur spring, which attracted visitors seeking its healing properties. The town became home to Ohio Wesleyan University in 1842, adding a strong academic presence that still shapes its identity. It’s also the birthplace of President Rutherford B. Hayes, adding presidential prestige to its past. During the Civil War, Delaware hosted Union training camps, including one of the few in Ohio for Black soldiers. Today, its historic downtown, preserved architecture, and events like the Little Brown Jug race reflect a community proud of its rich and layered history.
