History

Bexley began as two separate communities—Bullitt Park, home to Columbus elites, and Pleasant Ridge, centered around Capital University—before uniting in 1908. The name “Bexley” was suggested by Col. Lincoln Kilbourne, inspired by his family’s English heritage. Development accelerated after the Spanish–American War, when Camp Bushnell brought modern infrastructure to the area. In 1932, Bexley officially became a city, with William A. Schneider serving as its first long-term mayor. Over the decades, the city evolved from a wealthy enclave into a diverse, family-friendly suburb. Today, Bexley’s identity blends historic charm, academic roots, and a strong sense of community.
